It was great to arrive in Philly and be welcomed by 2 of my oldest & dearest friends. It is a long time and distance from the high school gang we once were where we plotted our "universal tour" of travel wish-list (that has been made into reality in our own separate ways!). Skye and Amy were in fine form and we explored the sights and characters of Philly while catching up on news and gossip. Some of the photos here capture the mood and sunshine.....Rem (Amy's boyfriend) was a trooper in pretending to like eating duck and hearing our schoolgirl style rants!
We took a 'trolly tour' of the murals and mosaics that are Philly's answer to graffiti and have become 'street art' and a proud symbol of the city. Super guides 1) Isiah Zagar gave birth to the city's mosaic style in the 1970s and it has a very distinctive style that has latest the decades...see http://www.phillymagicgardens.org/ while 2) Jane Golden explained the history and rocky road to establish the city's 3000+ murals http://www.muralasrts.org/ . Jane is another Eisenhower Fellow and I look forward to meeting her again later this week.
On Saturday night we attended a Gala event at the Magic Gardens which was a real 'local' event where we all tried our hand at making mosaics and we met a 'mom' from New Jersey who declared "this is a HOOT!"
Hi Marni
ReplyDeleteYou've done an excellent job on your first Blog attempt. Very impressed with inserting video (I still haven't done that) and the Philly Magic Garden is amazing. We saw Tyson last night and had a good chat at the Melbourne Heart vs Melbourne Victoru first game (rescheduled due to Grand Final replay). It was absolutely thrilling and Heart won!
keep blogging, Tam
